I just finished an entirely too long poetry unit with my students, and I loved every minute of it. One of the assignments I gave was to have the students write a poem using the conventions of poetry that they had learned, and to write an analysis of the poem. Here is just one of the gems:
Depths of Lies
I try to live
a truthful life
but all they do is fib.
I try to laugh
through ugly times
but that was only half,
half the story
of Everyday
but those were history.
Things that happened
yesterday are
not remembered.
Nothing lasts long
like a doorbell
ringing ding-dong, ding dong
Entering doors
of happiness
and falling on the floors
A survivor
against the lies
they have made you suffer
hearing a lie
everyday and
wishing I would just die
I try to live
a truthful life
but all they do is fib.
